Dear All, Salam
We read in 6:101
the Originator of the heavens and the earth! How could it be that He should have a child without there ever having been a mate for Him - since it is He who has created everything, and He alone knows everything?
Could a critic not ask that in many places when it comes to Allah's powers, all He has to say "Be" and it is? [no explanation necessary].
Can we then assume that where ever Allah says "Be" it means a process of cause and effect starts and every thing just not appears "Poof" as in a magic. This can apply to creation of the universe which took a very long time to develop.
In other words, this universe is run on the basis of cause and effect which we may refer to a natural law of which the Creator is the Cause of Causes.
Thanks

Salamun Alaikum
The act of manifesting something 'kun' and it becomes / is (fayakun) can apply to both a 'process' and an 'instant'. Both nuances are carried and there is some overlap. To single out anyone of them is incorrect.
So any assumption, in my humble opinion, that argues for any one as an absolute meaning is incorrect. The context of the Quran and its narratives should determine the best rendering.
However, it is also imperative to remember that God's 'kun' (be) even when in reference to an 'instant' should not be understood in a human's linear concept of time. God's 'kun' is part of a greater plan, transcending time and space and not like a human that responds instantly in accordance to changing circumstances. God is not subject to time and space. So if seas parted for Prophet Moses and his people in whatever way they parted, the intricate process to govern such an event would have initiated long before Prophet Moses and his people would have arrived at the shores.

Joseph
