Title: Mahar Given to a Woman
Post by: Reader Questions on October 14, 2013, 02:34:06 AM
Dear brother Joseph Islam,

Based on secondary sources (one hadith), some people say, if someone does not have money, even teaching the proposed girl something from the Quran is sufficient, which will be treated as Mahar for her.  Can we find any justification for this statement in the Quran?

I need some comments from you at your convenience

Thanks, regards

Wa alaikum assalam

There is absolutely no warrant for this practice in the Quran. If anything, the gift must be tangible of value as a woman should be able to give it away out of choice or half of it in certain circumstances when divorce is pronounced without consummation (2:237).

How can one give away half of something of the Quran that someone has taught one? I trust that you will concur.

I hope that helps, God willing.

Regards,
Joseph
