salam

I get your point Nura. The message is clear. What i really want to know is the grammatical aspect of it or an Arabic speaker perspective. How can it be "malik or maalik both" when there is a difference in meaning ?

For example; If these two words have the same meaning, why it is recitated as "maalik" in Fatiha but "malik (melik)" in Nas (... malikinnas...) ?

salam friends,

maybe i'm opening too much topics lately but i've gotta learn about these questions right away or i'll forget about them. There are lots of different explanations and translations about 22:15.

"Anyone who fancies that Allah will not support him in this world and in the Hereafter, let him reach out to heaven through a rope, and then make a hole in the sky and see whether his device can avert that which enrages him." (22:15)

I quote some of the translations from islamicstudies.info:

" 22. There is a great divergence of opinion about the exact meaning of this verse. Some of the interpretations are:

(1) One who presumes that Allah will not help him (Muhammad: peace be upon him), he should hang himself by a rope from the ceiling.

(2) One who presumes that Allah will not help him (Muhammad: peace be upon him), he should ascend to the sky by a rope and try to stop Allah's help.

(3) One who presumes that Allah will not help him (Muhammad: peace be upon him), he should ascend to the sky and stop the process of revelations.

(4) One who presumes that Allah will not help him (Muhammad: peace be upon him), he should ascend to the sky and stop his provisions.

(5) The one who presumes that Allah will not help him (the presumer himself), he should hang himself by a rope from the ceiling of his house.

(6) The one who presumes that Allah will not help him (the presumer himself), he should try to ascend to the sky to seek help.

The first four interpretations are obviously irrelevant to the context, and the last two, though they might fit in with the context, do not explain the real meaning of the verse. If we consider this in the context, it becomes obvious that the one who presumes is the one who serves Allah standing on the border line. This is to rebuke him, as if to say: You may do whatever you can to change the decrees of Allah, but you will see that no device of yours can succeed, whether these decrees are favorable to your designs or unfavorable to them. Obviously, "so let him stretch a rope up to the sky, then cut it off" has not been used in the literal but in the figurative sense.

Also there is a different opinion on this ayat and a good explanation MashaAllah:

http://quranqanda.com/4004/can-you-please-explain-the-15th-ayah-of-surat-hajj

But I want to know what your opinions are! (maybe brother Joseph's too).

salam Nura. thanks for the answer. Alhamdulillah a good one.

salam. thanks for your reply.

On what proof do you think they are exactly the same ? all over the internet i see that they have a subtle difference: one being the owner of a property and other one being the ruler of the property...

assalamu alaikum guys.

I know angels are no like humans, who have gender. In 43:19, people claimed angels were females and ALLAH says they will be questioned.

When we read about Prophet Lut (also Prophet Ibrahim) and also about our mother Maryam in 19:17 (peace be upon them all), the angels who appeared to them were always in male form.

Do you have any opinions on this ?

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

I've come across different recitations for "Maaliki yaumid Deen" in Fatiha. Is it "malik (melik) " or "maalik" ? Because I guess they have a difference in meaning. Like a difference between "a king" and "a owner". Nouman Ali Khan has a video about these two meanings. However, which one is there in the fourth ayat of Fatiha ? Recitations of this ayat are not the same ! Brother Joseph or any brother who knows the answer, can you please inform me about this ?

salam guys,

These astrologers don't know the future they just do predictions about you in a cunning way. They can have some knowledge about you, not about your future, but your present status or past experiences somehow.

For example if someone had a 90 year old grandpa/grandma and a 13 year old brother, they would make a guess and say, "this young man will not be married unless your grandpa is dead."

If you knew a person with a fatal disease, with a little knowledge of his/her condition, just like a doctor you could say "he/she will die in 5 years!" That's not a big thing. All you can do is guess, make up scenarios !

If you saw cumulonimbus clouds all over the sky you can pretty much predict what's gonna happen :D

What these fortune tellers do can easily affect people psychologically. It was 2 or 3 years ago, in summer time my mom and two aunts came to visit me for a one-week holiday. While we were walking and shopping in a touristic place, a fortune teller approached us, took my older aunt's hand, turned it over and began to examine her palm. Then she said that a woman in my uncle's office was too jealous of their marriage ! My aunt got really suspicious after that, she was annoyed out of nothing! For two days she thought about their marriage, didn't enjoy her holiday at all. I'm saying... Out of absolutely nothing, she got stressed out and spent her holiday with doubts ! Just because of that fortune teller lady.

This can ruin marriages, destroy lives and make you sick. Because it directly affects your mood, your brain. I can understand why it is haraam!

So seek refuge in Allah from the accursed shaitan. Trust in Allah. May He protect us all from all kinds of evil.

Salam.

assalamu alaikum bro

I don't think they can tell you about your future. There are lots of possibilities as to how they predict your current life or your past but when it comes to future, they can't.

"Then, when We decreed (Solomon's) death, nothing showed them his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his staff: so when he fell down, the Jinns saw plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have tarried in the humiliating Penalty (of their Task)."  (34:14)

"Say: "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor do I tell you I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me." Say: "can the blind be held equal to the seeing?" Will ye then consider not? (6:50)

"Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."" (46:9)

"Say, "I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe." (7:188)

salam guys

Thanks for your comments. I like going to the cinema, watching movies etc. It's like my only "allowed" entertainment. I'm not that social. I don't have many friends (not that i'm an evil person lol :) don't get me wrong ). I don't go partying, clubbing. I don't drink or something. Alhamdulillah. When I get really stressed out, my mind becomes full with waswasa (even while i'm reading the Quran), nonsense thoughts and sometimes I really can't fight them back. So I try to do something relaxing and then I turn on tv or watch a movie to calm my mind, distract it from ugly thoughts.

I asked this question because there are lots of different opinions on this. Personally, I think "not looking" and "lowering the gaze" are two different statements. However, generally these verses are taken as "do not look". As for "free-mixing" are there any ayats in the Quran that forbid this ?

#175
Assalamu alaikum my good friends,

Lately i've been reading about this topic online and most of the time i've come across such websites that define these actions as haraam, forbidden. They talk about cinemas, movie theaters for example and say that those places are dark and full with namahram men and women (a free-mixing community). Also they talk about movies and inappropriately dressed people in them. Most of these websites say that "looking" at "namahram" women or men is haraam. Is this the way it's supposed to be in Islam ?

What is a legal entertainment for a Muslim ? Can a Muslim watch a decent movie in the theater ? What do you guys think about this ?

Salamon,

From 2:216: كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ (It is written for you to fight) Who though must, and mustn't we fight?

Hello Salamon, I am sure Br. Joseph or one of the moderators will respond to you. However for now, this is an example of why the Qur'an needs to be read in its historical context. The Qur'an is a recitation primarily for Arab warriors, with possibly over 100 verses relating to warfare. These verses were never intended for us. There are principles we can draw from, however beyond that these verses are instructing 7th century Arab warriors.

That is my view anyway.

Wasalam
Zack

Salam Zack,

I know it's your view but i wonder if it's what you think about all these "warfare" ayats ? I mean all of them ? What is your proof that those ayats are not intended for us and what do you think the principles we should draw from them ?

assalamu alaikum

and this one from the 6. surah

83. And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibrahim (Abraham) against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

84. And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya'qub (Jacob), each of them We guided, and before him, We guided Nuh (Noah), and among his progeny Dawud (David), Sulaiman (Solomon), Ayub (Job), Yusuf (Joseph), Musa (Moses), and Harun (Aaron). Thus do We reward the good-doers.

85. And Zakariya (Zachariya), and Yahya (John) and 'Iesa (Jesus) and Iliyas (Elias), each one of them was of the righteous.

86. And Isma'il (Ishmael) and Al-Yas'a (Elisha), and Yunus (Jonah) and Lout (Lot), and each one of them We preferred above the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns) (of their times).

87. And also some of their fathers and their progeny and their brethren, We chose them, and We guided them to a Straight Path.

88. This is the Guidance of Allah with which He guides whomsoever He will of His slaves. But if they had joined in worship others with Allah, all that they used to do would have been of no benefit to them.

89. They are those whom We gave the Book, Al-Hukm (understanding of the religious laws), and Prophethood. But if these disbelieve therein (the Book, Al-Hukm and Prophethood), then, indeed We have entrusted it to a people (such as the Companions of Prophet Muhammad ) who are not disbelievers therein.

another translation for 89 is:

Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture and authority and prophethood. But if the disbelievers deny it, then We have entrusted it to a people who are not therein disbelievers.

So these prophets were given wisdom besides Scripture according to these ayats.

General Discussions / Re: copyright questions ???

Confusing topic actually. Sometimes when i want to watch foreign tv series on the internet, I see some copyright complaints and restrictions. There are tons of watch-online sites especially for tv series which are not featured in some countries, so that people can watch them. Is this kind of "streaming" illegal ?

Of course brother, inshaALLAH.
