360 Idols

Sallam brother Joseph

The 'famous' story about prophet Abraham destroying 360 idols at the kabba, is this a quran story or secondary sources?

Do you know if there is any hint of prophet Abraham or any other prophet from quran destroying idols?

No hurry, when ever you have time, thank you and sallam

Salamun Alaikum.

The story of Prophet Abraham striking at the idols is definitely Quranic, see 37:91-96 and 21:57-67.

However, details such as the number of idols etc are unquranic.

Joseph.

Sallam,

In todays context where we see some muslims mainly groups ousting one another, does the fact that prophet Abraham destroyed these idols mean it is 'ok' for others to do it?

Salamun Alaikum

I very seriously doubt that your inference is the purport of the verse.

It is clear that Prophet Abraham merely attempted to manifest a particular truth to his own people at a particular time by showing them how helpless their own creations were to whom they showed devotion. This is not a cue to destroy the worshipping objects of others wherever they are found. The Quran is merely narrating an incident and not giving sanction to a particular modus operandi.

Quranic verses should always be studied collectively and not as isolated verses.
