Salaamun Alaykum,

Ramadan Mubarak to all.

I've searched the whole forum (and articles) but couldn't find a thread involving Sir Joseph Islam view/thought on someone raising or addressing this question:

Is marriage enjoined on adult (able and potent) believers by the Quran in the ayah 24:32?

I find these two threads raising exact same question but no input from Sir Joseph:

Sir Joseph,

I really appreciate if you could spare few minutes and share your thoughts on this question?

Salaamun Alayka,
Sir Joseph,

Hope you're keeping well, inshallah  :)

I came across the book, New Approach to the Study of the Qur'an, By: Dr. Hasanuddin Ahmed, I.A.S.

http://www.netnavigate.com/hasan/newapproach/ch5.html

Point #11 of chapter 5 (in the above link) basically challenges your understanding and interpretation of 3:7 (and so your article: Are Mutashabih Verses Allegorical?) and presented cogent and diametrically opposite to your view, in my humble opinion. I've read all your posts related to 3:7 on the forum and nowhere anyone raised this aspect/possibility of interpreting 3:7 which the author of the book has presented.

The question the author (Dr. Ahmed) raised answer to exact same question sought from you also but went unanswered in one of the relevant thread:

QuoteAssuming your explanation, pursuing mutashabihat verses is prohibited according to Quran is true, it will create another issue.  It will create a need to have a list of mutashabihat verses to avoid committing a wrong and disobeying Allah's command.   Is there any list mutashabihat verses as such?

http://quransmessage.com/forum/index.php?topic=762.msg2834#msg2834

So, I would request (greatly respecting your time) your counter argument in refuting his interpretation in defense of your article. Kindly give due consideration as you yourself subscribe to this division of Quran which means that part of the Quran is/has been kept off limits and not knowing clearly which (subjective) :-\ is even more distressing.

with warm regards,

Salaamun Alaykum,

May I request the respected Arabic speaking members and/or those who are well versed in Arabic language to provide all possible meaning(s) of the letter waw و ? I heard in one of the Nouman Ali Khan's discourse that the letter و "waw" carries at least 21 meanings. Any reference(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Salaamun Alayka,
Sir Joseph,

Hope you're keeping well. Although I've read your all your articles including "The concept of Sadaqah & Zakah" couple of years ago, I revisited them last night after a (traditionalist) WhatsApp message triggered a discussion on exclusion of Syed family from Zakat funds, and noticed you did not make use of 2:219 or even cite it in either of these articles, and you've made a passing reference only 3 times in all your QM Forum posts - was it a overlook? Doesn't 2:219 alluding/seems to answer oft repeated question raised on the Quran on %age of Zakah?

Also, you've rightly distinguished between Zakah and Sadaqah but it appear your interpretation of this act as voluntary charity while 9:60 clearly made use of the words فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ اللَّهِ - Did I misread or misunderstood your position on the subject?

Your clarification is much appreciated, Jazak Allah khair in anticipation  :)

Dear QM moderator team,

I noticed surprisingly that all the external face book posts aren't working from QM FB tabular page. Is there something wrong or has something changed with the way the redirection is made or all of them expired and deleted from all these individual FB's profile?

Your investigation and possible restoration is really appreciated.

General Discussions / 33:37 interpretation
August 29, 2017, 06:34:07 AM
Salaamun alaykum,

Is Dr. Shabbir correct in his assertion about 33:37 interpretation:

QuoteBehold, (O Prophet) you did tell the one to whom Allah had shown Favor and to whom you had shown favor, "Hold on to your wife and be mindful of Allah. You seek to conceal in your heart what Allah intends to reveal. You are afraid of people whereas it is more appropriate to fear Allah." But when Zayd had observed all the rules and divorced her, We gave her to you in marriage. So that henceforth there may be no blame on the believers in respect of spouses of their adopted children when they have come to the dissolution of their union. And the Commandment of Allah must be fulfilled. (Contrary to many erroneous translations, the entire quote in this verse is addressed to Zayd since Messengers fear none but Allah (33:39). Also the admonition of the Prophet to Zayd clearly indicates that he, and not his wife, was at fault)

In other words, did he got the quotes right (red text)? If not, what part of the sentence is Zayd addressee and what part is towards the Prophet (pbuh)? The correct demarcation.

Thanks,

General Discussions / Understanding 66:4
January 16, 2017, 05:48:53 AM
Salaamun Alaykum,

Does anyone know if Sir Joseph Islam discussed/elaborate 66:4, my search failed to find relevant discussion although I found couple of threads on previous ayah 66:3 but nothing on 66:4.

[Say, O Prophet:] "Would that you two turn unto God in repentance, for the hearts of both of you have swerved [from what is right]! And if you uphold each other against him [who is God's message-bearer, know that] God Himself is his Protector, and [that,] therefore, Gabriel, and all the righteous among the believers and all the [other] angels will come to his aid."

My question in attempting to grasp the full picture/context of the discussion - why the wives of the Prophet (pbut) were sternly warned/reminded with reinforcement and support by Allah swt, Jibrael AS, Believers and Angels - all together (unimaginable power pack) against just two naturally/physically weak women for seemingly petty and domestic issue?

Islamic Duties / Juma vs Zuhr
November 06, 2016, 06:40:20 AM
Salaam,

Does anyone know any discussion or good Quran based resource on the differences between Juma and Zuhr prayer. Traditional Islam impose lot of conditions depending on School's jurisprudence for Salat Juma to become Wajib. Any differences we glean from Quran between these two prayers when only one is possible on Friday?

The Origin of Moab and Ammon
30 And Lot went up out of Zoar and settled in the hill country, and his two daughters with him, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave with his two daughters. 31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come into us as is the way of all the earth. 32 Come, let's make our father drink wine, and let's lie with him, so that we can preserve our father's seed." 33 So they made their father drink wine that night; and the firstborn went in and lay with her father. But he didn't know when she lay down nor when she arose.

34 And it came to pass on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine again tonight. Then you go in and lie with him, so that we can preserve our father's seed." 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down nor when she got up.

36 Thus both of Lot's daughters were with child by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben Ammi. He is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.

Found one thread but no comment from Sir Joseph:
http://quransmessage.com/forum/index.php?topic=628.msg2353#msg2353

Br. Hope stated this:
QuoteStory of Lut is one of the inconsistencies in the Bible.  Though he has been considered a righteous servant of God in Genesis:18,  yet in 19 we are told that he was guilty of incestuous sex with his daughters: clearly a fabrication.  Quran states that he was given wisdom and knowledge

My question is - was this a fabrication pre-Quranic revelation or post? Or in general, do you (Sir Joseph) happen to know or come across interpolation and tampering in the OT and NT after the Quran revelation?

Please shed some light at your time and convenience, while I'm posing the questions on difficult topics as I read OT from top down and then intend to read NT inshallah.

Discussions / Genesis 18:1-26 (Shocking)
October 29, 2016, 11:23:16 AM
Salaam,
Sir Joseph,

Abraham's Three Visitors
1 And Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he was sitting at the entrance of the tent in the heat of the day. 2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing nearby him....8 And he took curds, and milk, and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them, and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
16 The men rose up from there and looked down toward the face of Sodom. Abraham was walking with them to send them on their way. 17 Yahweh said, "Should I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 since Abraham will become, yes, become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him? 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of Yahweh by doing what is right and just, so that Yahweh may bring on Abraham what he has spoken concerning him." 20 And Yahweh said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin is so very grievous, 21 that I will go down now and see whether what they have done is as bad as the reports that have come to me. And if not, I will know." 23 The two men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before Yahweh.
Source: http://www.revisedenglishversion.com/Genesis/18

commentary:
"go down." Yahweh is with Abraham in the hill country of Judah and Sodom is to the east down by the Dead Sea, thousands of feet below them, so "go down" is literal here.
http://www.revisedenglishversion.com/Genesis/chapter18/21

commentary:
"Abraham still stood before Yahweh." There is good evidence the original text read that Yahweh stood before Abraham, but that wording generally indicated that Abraham was greater than Yahweh, so the scribes changed the wording to seem more acceptable, and that it was Abraham who stood before Yahweh.
http://www.revisedenglishversion.com/Genesis/chapter18/22

Summary:

  • Yahweh (God) was one of the three men
  • Yahweh (God) partook in the food
  • Yahweh (God) gets 2nd hand reports
  • Yahweh (God) doesn't trust reports until after His own personal verification
  • Original OT words modified to keep Yahweh's (God) status
  • Yahweh (God) is neither Omnipresent nor All-knowing

Questions:

  • Is this correct and reliable translation from the original Hebrew text? If so,
  • How do you remove this blatant blasphemy from this chapter?
  • How do Jews understand and interpret this chapter?
  • For Trinitarians I believe this chapter gives them ample of fodder to support their theology, isn't it?
  • Or is this a controversial chapter among the Jewish faith and academics on its existence?

Honestly, I was shocked and I'm still trying to regain and recollect myself from/after last night's reading. Hope you'll throw some light and perhaps altogether different one to make any sense out of this entire chapter.

Discussions / Genesis 1:27 - Interpretation?
October 28, 2016, 12:58:19 PM
Salaam,
Sir Joseph,

Is this correct translation of the of Genesis Chapter 1, verse 27 from original Hebrew? And if so what is the accurate interpretation:

27 And God created the man in his own image.
In the image of God he created him.

This has been repeated few more times in the first few chapters I've read so far.

Salaamun Alayka,
Sir Joseph,

I'm extremely curious to know since 4 Sunni school of thought (Jurisprudence) precedes Ahadith Corpus, I would like to know if you have in your long research period looked/studied them and their basis? If yes:

  • Were they based on the Quran?
  • Has any Imam's original work survived and reached us?

Thanks,

Discussions / Verse numbering in OT and NT
October 27, 2016, 01:54:02 AM
Salaam,

I would like to know if the book:chapter:verse numbering system is standard and consistent across all versions of OT and NT available today just as we now have with the Quran?

Salaamun Alaykum,
Sir Joseph,

I was surprised in fact shocked to learn that there is not one single verse in entire Torah and Talmud explicitly mentioning afterlife (Hell and Heaven) - is this true? How is it possible contrasting this with the Quran so vivid that it takes its reader to a virtual tour of pleasures of paradise and the horrors of the Hell? It condemns anyone who does not believe in the afterlife to Hell, how then are Jews expected to fare well with few implied figurative verses in OT and most of them rejecting the Quran in its entirety?

Its etymology and precise meaning are unknown.

General Discussions / Wahy vs Kalam?
October 17, 2016, 04:06:10 AM
Salaam,

Did Joseph sir discuss the difference "Wahy vs Kalam" anywhere on QM? I'm intrigued by some Quranic verses where Prophet MusaAS is told of doing (simple) tasks through Wahy (Awha) while we're clearly informed that God directly communicated with him without the medium (Kalam). So why sent Wahy and not make Kalam when issuing commands to MusaAS?

Is Wahy something official brought by the agent JibraelAS and something that gets committed to writing in the scriptures as oppose to kalam which is personal and unofficial?

Thanks for your time
