Dear Brother Joseph,

Thank you for you reply and clarification.
I agree that wisdom may not always mean the verses of the book. However there are many verses that state that indeed the verses = Hikmah. For example see the verses below.

[2:231]
... and the fact that He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is well acquainted with all things.

Here wisdom was sent down like the book, implying that its synonymous with the verses of the Quran.

[3:58]
This, We recite to you of the verses and the Wise Remembrance.

[17:39]
That is of the wisdom your Lord has revealed to you ...

[36:2]
By the Wise Koran,

Furthermore "wa" can be also be used to provide further explanation, not only to separate two separate notions. For example:

[5:15]
... A light has come to you from Allah and a Clear Book,

The Light and the Clear book are the same thing.

So I think both views are correct. Wisdom may = the Verses and may mean the wisdom that is granted by God.

Do you agree with this conclusion ?

Dear Brother Joseph,

Can you clarify your third point about Hikmah, as I did not understand it.

Quote
Finally, the 'ayats' (Quranic verses) and the 'hikmah' (wisdom) are indeed two separate notions. Albeit 'hikmah' (wisdom) can be 'extracted' from the verses of the Quran and applied in different contexts (as would have arguably be done at the time of the prophet), this does imply they are one of the same. The traditional brother is once again correct with his argument in this regards. I have discussed this in article [4] below and respectfully assert that 'hikmah' clearly denotes the 'enlightenment' or 'wisdom' one acquires from an accumulated body of work or knowledge.

If wisdom can be extracted from the Quran would this mean that they are the same thing ? And What is the traditional brother correct about ?

The authenticity of the Ahadith corpus is irrelevant from a 'religious authority' perspective. Even if the Ahadith were 100% authentic, this does not imply they have 'religious Divine sanction' for all humanity. For example, even the prophet had personal desires, likes, dislikes and was a product of his culture, community and setting within a certain slice of history. For example, if the prophet was born, say in China today, would he wear a thobe (dishdasha), use a miswak and / or ride a camel?  Would he apply generic Quranic verses in exactly the same manner in different societal contexts and given the varying needs of different communities with the same outcomes?

If a hadith about the prophet's desires is 100% authentic, it would not imply that it has religious Divine sanction. I agree. But what about a hadith that is not about the prophets desires but instead about a clear command. (For example: X is Haram). If hypothetically speaking we consider it 100% authentic then it would follow that it has religious authority. As we cannot deny a command by the prophet, if we knew it was 100% authentic. What are your thoughts ?

Thank you

Regards,
Ahmed

« on: March 22, 2017, 06:39:49 AM »
As-salam Alaykum,
I noticed a similarity between a verse in the Bible and a Hadith. Any Explanation for this ?

Sahl bin Sa'd (May Allah be pleased with him) said:
I was in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ). He gave a description of Jannah and concluded with these words, "There will be bounties which no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human heart has ever perceived." He (ﷺ) then recited this Verse: "Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Rubb in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allah's Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them. No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy..." (32:16,17)

------------------

1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and upon the heart of man has not come up that which God has prepared for those who love him.”

As Salam Alaykum,

How can we deal with the fact that if a bible passage does not contradict the Quran, it does not necessarily mean that its from God. It may still may be forged.
How can we be sure that such a passage is authentic ?

General Discussions / Reconciling verse 4:93
« on: March 07, 2017, 01:38:41 AM »
As-Salam Alaykum,

How can we reconcile the following two verses ? Can intentional murder be forgiven ? And why does verse 4:93 say whoever kills a believer instead of whoever kills any Human ?

[4:93]
But whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.

[4:48]
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.

Thank you

Thank for the link. But I was asking about the number of prayers per day, the article mainly talks about Prayer form.

Did the Christians and jews ever have 5 prescribed prayers like Muslims ?
Is there a way to know how many prayers did Prophet Abaraham Pray ? Were they 5 prayers ?

Thanks.

Dear Sardar,

It is mentioned in 9:84. However it is mentioned as a practice that is already known not as something new.

[9:84]
And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.

Is the story of Adam and Eve in the bible accurate from a Quranic perspective ?

For example, why did a serpent deceive Adam and Eve and not the Devil like in the Quran ?

Does [4:1]
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate

Refer to Eve being created from Adam's rib ?

Thank you in advance.

Prophets and Messengers / Re: Are we to follow Duas that Ahadith say?
« on: November 08, 2016, 06:19:30 AM »
Dear Sardar,

My opinion is that as long as we don't say that the prophet said it (This is unproven) and as long as the dua does not contradict the Quran. Then I see no problem in reciting it. Additionally I see no problem in reciting any dua as long as its in harmony with the Quran. Just like the dua recited in Taraweh prayer in Ramadan.

Salam.
