General Discussions / Re: Two Female Witness
« on: November 08, 2016, 04:33:15 AM »
Although the verse states "so that if one of the women errs, then the other can remind her" This does not automatically mean that the requirement for two women for testimony is reduced to one if she does not err. Maybe it means whether or not she errs, two women are still required for testimony. In other words, maybe it means that two women should show up, if one errs then the other should remind her, but even then the testimony of two women is still required.

Is there a clear argument to deny this plausible interpretation ?

Dear Wanderer,

When you say as "a backup", do you mean that at times only one women will suffice for testimony ?

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts  :)

Building upon your sentiments, I believe verse 9:11 makes a significant point.

[9:11]
But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then they are your brothers in religion; and We detail the verses for a people who know.

Which is that the Belief in One God, Prayer and Zakah are enough to make a person a brother in Religion. So we can argue so all sectarian divides can be included as brothers in Faith.

The only thing that hinders me from fully accepting this, is that some argue that taking other sources besides the Quran can amount to shirk. In addition to this, verse 5:44 explicitly says that "whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers." Traditional muslim judge by other sources besides the Quran. I don't want to jump to conclusions but I am not sure this verse applies to them or not.

[5:44]
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.

So I have reached a dead end. One the one hand, those who belief in one God, pray and give zakat are considered brothers in Faith but on the other hand, taking as other sources besides the Quran is definitely a sin. But I am not sure if it amounts to disbelief/Shirk. Because if it does then how can those taking these sources be regarded as brothers in Faith.

Thoughts ?

General Discussions / How to regard those who follow traditional Islam.
« on: October 26, 2016, 07:18:39 AM »
Traditional Muslims regard those who have a Quran centric view as disbelievers/misguided. What then should the stance of Quran centric folk towards traditional Muslims ? Should they be regarded as brothers in faith even when there are great differences in views ? Even if many of their convictions go against the Quran ? Even if they see Quran centric ideas as a  threat ?

What's your opinion on this ?

Thank you in advance.

As-salam Alaykum,

Why is the style of writing of the Bible so different than the Quran. For example, In Quranic stories there is usually little details and the emphasis is on providing guidance. However in the Bible the stories are much more detailed to the extent that it may seem difficult to extract guidance from it. Why is this the case when both the Bible and the Quran are from the same author.

Thank you in advance

Dear Wanderer,

I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone in what you are going through. All Truth seekers have gone through much suffering in order to reach a path that is closer to the truth. When one leaves his old beliefs to search for the truth. One becomes very fragile. But don't worry, with time you become less fragile as you get firmly grounded in Truth. Patience is key, even the prophet did not receive the Quran at once. And many verses in the Quran tell the prophet to not be in doubt from what has been revealed.

[3:60]
This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be in doubt.

Its normal to be in doubt, to be confused. We all go through these phases. And don't say that you are a disbeliever or a hypocrite. How can you say that when God has guided you to learn more about islam from this website. Trust me you have been guided to a path that is closer to the truth than many others. The insecurity you feel should be a driving force that will make you learn more. And maybe one day God may use you to guide others with the knowledge he will give you.

Good luck  :)

Dear Eliiah,

I said:

Quote
You'll find that its a commandment to the children of Israel to not conceal the truth or mix it with falsehood.(As Eliiah said). However, when it comes to books, movies, etc. One should simply stay away from those that go against the Quran's teachings. Like media that has obscene material.

I mean that the part about books and movies are not related to the Verse 2:42. And I agree that it should be be taken from other verses like 24:30-31 which you have shared.

Dear Yahya,
I believe if you put the verse into its context as follows:

O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me. (40) And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me. (41) And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it]. (42)

You'll find that its a commandment to the children of Israel to not conceal the truth or mix it with falsehood.(As Eliiah said). However, when it comes to books, movies, etc. One should simply stay away from those that go against the Quran's teachings. Like media that has obscene material.

Prophets and Messengers / Re: How can I recognise a messenger?
« on: August 12, 2015, 09:02:51 PM »
As salam alaykum,
Its been a long time since I've joined a discussion :).

Dear brother Joseph,

I wanted to share a maybe different perspective regarding the following point:
Quote
Anyone that guides to those fundamental truths with clear arguments from Scripture can be arguably deemed as messengers

According to:

[35:24] Saheeh International
Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.

And

[9:122] Saheeh International
And it is not for the believers to go forth [to battle] all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group [remaining] to obtain understanding in the religion and warn their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.

The Believers who were entrusted with the task to deliver the message were described as "warners". This could explain how communities received their warnings in the post Quranic era (35:24). Without anyone declaring himself as messenger. As every messengers is a Warner but not every Warner is necessarily a messenger.

Furthermore, The main counter argument to this, is in section 11

The main argument there is that the word messenger has been used to denote the helpers of a central messenger. Therefore the term messenger can describe "Anyone that guides to fundamental truths with clear arguments from Scripture".

I think there are two problems with this interpretation.

First of all, even If we assume that its a correct interpretation we are still left with a crucial difference. Its that those messenger mentioned were helpers of central messengers sent by GOD. Since there are no central messengers now. I don't think the situation is the same. That's why I believe the term "Warner" better describes those who guide others in the post Quranic Era. As it described the knowledgeable believers who taught their communities (9:122)

2. The second issue. It that its not Explicitly mentioned that the messengers (being referred to) were those who helped the Central messenger. It may be a possible interpretation but one cannot rule out the possibility that the Quran was referring to other messengers who were sent to the same communities. (But their stories were not told.   (4:164) ).

Please let me know your thoughts .

Regards,
Ahmad.

Dear Sardar,

Thank you for you clarification

Dear Sardar,

This verse refers to the direct consumers of usuary. In this case the parents. I am unsure if the same thing applies to the children. That's why I was asking about a supporting verse. Anyway, Thank you  :)

Salam.
