General Discussions / Looking for a dictionary
January 23, 2019, 02:25:17 AM
May peace be upon you all my brothers and sisters. I ask your help about something. I have been looking for an Arabic to English dictionary which especially shows the diffrence between words that have the same meaning on the surface but actually have differences in meaning. As you all know not every word has the exact equivalent in target languages while translating Qur'an. That's why I want to know why God chose a particular word over another in some verses. For example they translate the words قرا and تلا into Turkish as "reading" but there is certainly a difference between the both, big or small. Some things are lost in translation. I hope I have made myself clear. I really appreciate if you could point me to the right direction. Thank you all in advance. Peace.

Whenever I hear that some people claim salah or other islamic duties are spiritual rather than physical, immediately the following verse comes to my mind.

43:37
And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided. Sahih International

This verse tells us a lot. Human psychology has always been inclined to taking the easy way out especially towards the religious duties. That's why it is really understandable how people are easily convinced because even many self-claimed muslims leave daily prayers or don't even start to perform them claiming that "I am a good person, I don't commit sin and God will look at my heart that's why I don't need to perform salah. Since I am not doing anything bad I sure doesn't deserve to be put into hell" But when you ask them: "OK. You don't deserve hell for all these reasons but what are you doing to deserve heaven?" Then there comes a sudden silence. Everybody wants heaven but nobody wants to do the hard work, but no pain no gain right? Gaining something easily has always been immensely satisfactory for all of us. Trying to find an easy way out to escape religious duties is an extremely powerful motive and people with this motive are not so hard to convince as they are already looking for a way out. The inner peace they feel while going down this road is something to be seen. I have seen it and it is amazingly real. As a result, it is stunning how the verse in question warns us against our own nafs which can make us think that we are on the right path while we may have already gone astray.

Selâmün aleyküm dear brothers and sisters in religion. I am Abdullah from Turkey, a 34 years old teacher who seeks the clarification of verses by Allah (cc) (75:19).

For quite some time something has been weighing on my mind, that is, whether or not passing wind breaks wudu. Although I have read the Quran countless times, sometimes it takes time for a verse to speak to you. When I read the two verses (4:43, 5:6) about wudu I always come to the same conclusion, that is, in order for us to repeat wudu we need to have done something in WC which requires cleaning with water.

4:43 (partial)
And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it].

5:6 (partial)
But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it.

Some people say that there are three things that we do in WC: defecating, urinating and passing wind. When it is said to them "OK but nobody goes to WC just to pass wind." then they say "If so , You don't have to go to WC to defecate or urinate either. You can do them somewhere outside." But here is what they overlook, it does not matter where you do those actions; as we all know only two of them require cleaning with water. Nobody cleans themselves upon passing wind afterall, except for rare occasions when something comes out with gas.

So the real reason why passing wind does not nullify wudu is it does not require cleaning with water while the other two do and more importantly the verses clearly say that we need to have done something (defecating, urinating) that requires cleaning with water. Allah (cc) already tells us the condition.

Allah (cc) knows best.

I would like to have your opinions about the matter. May peace be upon you all.

This type of questions are especially asked by atheists who think that they will outsmart believers and put them through the hoop. Another version of this is " Can God create a rock which he cannot lift." If the believer to whom the question is asked says "yes" then they will say "aha God is not that strong afterall." If he says no then they will be like "aha God is not that capable afterall." The main problem with their logic which they intentionally or unintentionally overlook is that they try to estimate God through qualities that only apply to human beings. Being able or not are humanly qualities that cannot be ascribed to God. As we all know  God is the creator of everything  including logic as well. The best answer to this kind of illogical questions, in my humble opinion, is to tell them this: "Yes he can create a rock that he cannot lift and with this he can also create a different logic system where his being unable to lift that rock will not be a problem at all." If they Object saying this is illogical then I say "If you can ask illogical questions then you have to accept illogical answers."
