General Discussions / What is maqam-e-mehmood in 17:79
« on: February 28, 2016, 09:25:45 PM »
Please can anyone explain to me the meaning of maqam-e-mehmood in 17:79?
Is this the rank that will be given to the Prophet pbuh on the day of judgement as traditionalists claim?

Dear Sword,

I see no contradiction in these verses, in my opinion, the verses that you quote apart from 55:39 are letting us know about questioning of a particular kind.
here are common questioning words: why? when? how? who? did you...? where?
Apart from 55:39 all the questionings can be of why? and did you?
for verse 55:39 the questionings of type how? when? where? and who? are useless as all the deeds will be displayed before jinn and men and they will be witness over themselves. So need to question something already evident and exposed!

Hope that helps!

Dear SStikof and Mia666,

You must have observed that most quran-centric people, out of fear, like to remain anonymous, this is okay as long as they propel the arguments from Quran. How many Quran-centric TV channels you see broadcasting? Zero! How many sectarian religious channels you see? Many!

We are going through a critical era, where internet has made access to hidden information thanks Almighty for that and people like me have switched to QC side now Alhamdolillah! Before that these decadent ulama used to hide behind holy smoke and parroting "arabic this arabic that". Not anymore now, but centuries of ignorance and humongous masses will not be swayed away easily and in a couple of years. This will take time and will indeed be very very risky as QC people are declared heretic by traditionalists fanatic fatawa.

We have to see ground reality and current affairs as well.

Dear SStikof and Mia666,

His stance about Sunnah and hadees being different is very much clear if you delve deeper into his research and methodology articles and this is in-line with JI's views, however, you both are correct, that sometimes (in his tv shows) mostly he is seen to be contradicting his stance and takes hadees for authority (sometimes).

I guess the problem is more than just the methodology, you see, JG is from a society of Pakistan, which is full of extremists and people are ignorant, bigoted and egotistical here, im also from Pakistan. His stance on Salman Taseer's episode where he openly condemned Mumtaz Qadri the murderer's act, he received death threats from all over the country and he had to flee to Malaysia for that purpose.

I think, i might be wrong, that the day when he openly states his stance, his TV shows will be banned as most of the public likes to remain in ignorance due to cognitive dissonance disorder. This is why, near me, he appears to switchover in his stances while on public forums.

Dear Duster,

I concur with your analysis. Both JI and JG are very much quran-centric scholars, JI's stance is better that Quran is Qazi over Sunnah (excluding hadees hearsay ofcourse), whereas JG says Quran &  Sunnah (excluding hadees hearsay ofcourse) are noth Qazis. This is near me, wrong and not supported by Quran.

So thumbs up for your analysis bro :)

Dear SStikof,

I was watching a debate between some mufti and ghamidi sahib on a tv show where ghamidi sahib did take the stance that head cover is not compulsory. Ghamidi sahib sometimes switchover :) as per my observations till date. Rest about other points you have raised, all is appreciated as long as one sticks to quran as guidance only, but what about the best interpretation? We will have to use our reason for that after listening to all sides from quran-centric spectrum of interpretations. After all God will only judge as per our capacity and intellect that He gave to us in proportions He deemed fit for us, but that is, if we take Quran as the sole religious guidance and nothing else!

I was mainly concerned about the points where JI and JG appear to agree and that is the ritualistic aspects of salat, hajj and fasting to hold far more authenticity than ahadees corpus.

That was my point!

I said "mainly uncorrupted" it means major portion of them are not corrupted, rest about the corrupted portions of these rituals, one can filter them out using "quranic lens", thus one wants to call it sunnah or "perpetual practical mass adherence of masses through generations" is still subservient to Quran and not equal to it.

Dear SStikof,

Masturbation is allowed or not! It is a grey area, quran is explicitly silent about a practice millenia old. Anyway, it is better to err on the safe side, so using quran's implied message about staying away from fawahish, it is better to control one's self as much as possible, but if the situation becomes unbearable then i think it is okay.

Anyway, the main argument about practical sunnah that includes rituals of salat, hajj and fasting to be mainly uncorrupted is okay with me. This is what Joseph Islam also concurs with in his articles about difference between hadees and sunnah.

Dear SStikof,

i agree with Ghamidi sb's point of view, with a little difference, sunnah is also subservient to Quran, and not equal to it.

Rest is 100% agreeable.

Just because wikiislam is anti islamic, it does not mean every article in it is false, especially when the author gives references and this pickle story is taken from hadees corpus, the authenticity of which is not greater than the other historians of the world like that of india. So why believe in one and not the other? Hadees or other historical stories, all are inherently flawed and biased, needs a lot of crirical evaluation by listening to both sides. Anyway you must also know that this alleged mosque faced east instead of west towards kaabah!

You are most welcome brother! I, just like you, came out from bowels of traditional islam by the grace of Almighty! The transition to quran-centric islam was like breaking ideological hell loose on my peace of mind, but i persisted and prayed in all earnest to Allah and now after my own humble research and with His help i am at much ease and peace. Remember, there is no gain without pain!

Dear Sardar Miyan,

Did you read the indian historian's perspective about King Charaman? I read an article in WikiIslam about an indian king meeting with our Prophet pbuh. There the indian historical sources say another story that the alleged king was born 250 years after Prophet's demise and the mosque is dated to be 629 A.D. is fishy, needs carbon dating :P (if applicable)

Dear SStikof,

Single Chain Narration is like this A----> B----> C----> D ----> E ----> F ----> G -----> Prophet pbuh.
Multiple chain is a statement coming from 2 or more single chains like above.
Multiple chains are further classified as "Ghareeb" 2 chains, "azeez or mashoor" 3 chains and "mutwatir" more than 3 chains, however, there is no consensus on the definition of a mutwatir narration. i.e. how many chains should be there to call it a mutwatir.
However, you will be surprised to know that even multiple chain narrations are not wholly correct, as we find that the last sermon of Prophet pbuh was witnessed by 125,000 or so attendants, so many people heard the single sermon, one would expect to find only one version of it, however, there are 3 versions in Sahih Muslim of this most mutwatir hadees, those three versions are as follows:
-Im leaving behind for you two things, hold on to them tight, and you will be never misguided, Book of Allah and my sunnah (sunnis love this one)
-Im leaving behind for you two things, hold on to them tight, and you will be never misguided, Book of Allah and my family (shias love this one)
-Im leaving behind for you only one thing, hold on to them tight, and you will be never misguided i.e. Book of Allah! (sunnis and shias hate this one)

Now,as you can imagine, so many multiple chains and such chaotic difference in versions!! This is why we call Quran word of God, personally protected by Him!! Alhamdolillah! Such is the devastation of "Chinese Whispers"! After all, at the end of the day, what will one prove of a hadees in scrutiny? That it is 99% authentic?! Even then, Quran does not give the authority in religious creed and law to anyone save itself! So, the most pertinent question to ask is? What is the fruit of such strenuous activity in grading the hadees, when at the top of the Pyramid Quran is there to reject anyone's authority apart from itself.

Dear SStikof,

Mr. Javed Ghamidi is very much quran-centric scholar, i like him and was a rung for me to climb from traditional Islam to Quran-centric one, however, he places Sunnah Practices equal to Quran. Nothing is equal in authority and authenticity to Quran! Everything is subservient to it, Sunnah practices (as they are followed en masse) are practical aspects of religion in which corruption's entry is very much restricted by their very nature. It is easier to copy a particular gesture or ritual, as it is mechanical in nature. However, the only thing granted God's personal protection is Quran, He didnt even protect His previous words (injeel & torah)! So it is a great mercy from God which is unfortunately goes un-appreciated in the eyes of traditionalists. So sunnah practices with their rather-less-corruption are still to be filtered through quran!

Sunnah is something else (practical & related only to rituals like salat & hajj ), Hadees is a separate thing, it is oral narrations / traditions with no compilation record and over 98% of it is single chain source, not authentic at all! However, they being the doubtful apocrypha are good to know about history of earlier muslims and may contain some general wisdom. That is it and that is all! They have no authority in religion. Quran is the sole authority, God is the only Legislator!
