General Discussions / 39:6 - cattles sent down?
« on: August 07, 2018, 11:04:50 AM »
Salaamun Alaykum,

I was kind of surprised to read (careless in paying attention before) the cattles were sent (Anzala) down for us? Some translate Anzala as "gave", "created", "made" etc and most keep it loyal to the text "Sent down". I didn't find Sir Joseph discussing this in the forum as no one seems to raise this curiosity??

And what's up with the number 8? Any particular reason, clue?

Looking forward to hear your insights into this part of the ayah.

General Discussions / Ismaeel or Ishaaq (PBUT)

Salaamun Alayka,
Dear Sir Joseph,

I hope you're doing well by God's grace. I just finished reading today's Quran portion and the passages was covered includes ayahs 37:100 t0 37:113. I do not see a break in the sequencing of events told and the flow of ayahs, so how do you see a break? First without naming a son's glad-tiding is given (37:101) and the whole dream of sacrifice is narrated and then again with the name Ishaq AS a glad-tiding is given (37:112) right after narrating the sacrificial event to clearly imply and separate the two sons. To me it looks completely two different sons and two different glad-tidings with first being unnamed (Ismaeel or whoever was his first son) and then birth of Ishaaq AS a new and second son, isn't it?

Also, you do not subscribe to the command of sacrifice in the dream as Divine source but the passage seems to clearly implies it was from God as I see it
1. Falamma Aslama, (submitted to who, if not God & His command?)
2. Saddaq tar-ruya, (attested/confirmed the dream, confirmed to who, if not God?)
3. Najzee al muhsineen, (rewards for doing good work, why is God rewarding and patting him for something not from Him?)
4. Balaaa ul-Mubeen, ( clear, manifest, severe test, from whom if not God?)

Looking forward to your clarification with the hopes that you'll come across this thread and spare few minutes here, inshallah  :)

General Discussions / Hajj for People of the Book?

Salaamun Alayka,
Dear Sir Joseph,

I've read "Hajj and Umrah" article more than once and just now was referring again as a discussion ensued on WhatsApp group. I had this question for quite sometime but keeps forgetting to ask, you wrote:

Quote
Hajj has been a practice that has been followed by successive generations of Prophet Abraham. (pbuh)

So, is that Hajj practice still in situ or is it lost? Or only some remnants remained?

Also, who's the addressee in 22:27 - and in the mankind, doesn't Jews & Christians included? If so, how do you reconcile with 5:48 that they're to keep their shariyat meaning keep their Hajj at original sanctuary?

Hope you're keeping well and spare some moments to shed some light here, inshallah  :)

Jazak Allah Khair!

General Discussions / Tawrat to Musa AS
« on: July 28, 2018, 07:09:41 AM »
Salaamun Alayka,
Sir Joseph,

I'm not sure if you know Urdu or not  :) but this person has made the well trained traditional scholar speechless:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7E62Jh9W34&t=0s&index=44&list=LLmPKXzuYZrU2L0HjhOarTyw

The challenge he is basically making is to show just one place where the word Tawrat (which occurred 18 times) comes together with Musa AS (which occurred 136 times) in the entire Quran.

It's very interesting challenge. Hope you shed some light here.

Walekumus Salaam,
Dear brother Athman,

Brilliant, simply brilliant Mashallah ;D Jazak Allah Khair! - what the wisdom/purport?

I've given reasons I almost always seek answer directly from Sir Joseph, just to repeat his life long academic research, multi lingual expertise, scriptures expertise and of course the simple yet superb explanation of even complex topics among many other things. But please don't worry and continue to share your thought and understanding you may have for any questions I raise, I really appreciate your time and help!

Thanks,

Dear Sir Joseph,

Do you know if name of Father-in-Law of Musa AS appeared in OT/NT? And was he a prophet/messenger?

General Discussions / Understanding 27:44
« on: July 22, 2018, 05:28:37 AM »
Salamun Alayka,
Dear Sir Joseph,

I've come across many times the ayah 27:44 in my Quran readings, still unable to grasp its purport, can you share your thoughts and wisdom you extracted from this ayah?

Dr. Shabbir wrote this: 'Kashafat 'an saqaiha' idiomatically means that she was spellbound, and not that she bared her calves; a common error of many translators.

Thanks and Jazak Allah Khair.

General Discussions / Re: Is 5:97 referring to Dhil Hajja?
« on: July 13, 2018, 12:32:10 AM »
Thanks Hamzeh, my search missed this thread as I generally search an ayah in the nn:nn format, the questioner used n, nn  ;)

It helped me quite a bit but I still have the Q for Sir Joseph as he stated:

Quote
The word 'shahr' (month), can also denote 'months' (plurality) depending on its grammatical construction and context. It can also be understood to denote a month (shah-ra) as part of other months.

5:97 is in Hajj context, is grammar of the word/sentence (ayah) makes it plural or singular? Kindly elaborate.

General Discussions / Is 5:97 referring to Dhil Hajja?
« on: July 12, 2018, 03:12:05 PM »
Salaamun Alayka,
Dear Sir Joseph,

Is 5:97 referring to Dhil Hajja? Most of the translations is singular for waalshshahra alharama and some taking it plural for sacred months, so my question to you specifically given your ardent academic research and language fluency:

Is waalshshahra alharama - singular or plural?
If singular, then is traditional Muslims are right in reducing the 4 months to single dhil Hajj by sanction of this ayah?
Or this month is still one of four and need not pin pointing specific one?

Anticipating your clarification with much thanks and gratitude :)

Salamun Alaykum,

Came across some clips that shows Simpsons cartoon series has made some allusions to events long before they happened in real life including 911.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W50gsSB4wi4

Any thoughts?

Peace Wakas,

I can clarify the first two points but it seems unnecessary....however I would definitely like to know the reasons you think Quran did not make 4 Hajj months straight forward. Please kindly share and enlighten me.

Thanks Wakas for the clarification. Yes, I did read the article you kindly shared but the moment archaeology is used as evidence I lost interest. It's not only questioning but authoritatively dismissing Juma as a day, the week of Juma, the month of Ramadan and the whole lunar calendar system on the bases which are outside the Quran. "So what happens in the occasional years where we have 13 full-moons from one summer solstice to the next? The answer is that we simply do not count the 13th moon." Honestly, it is quite weaker than the one I shared.

Sir Joseph proposed 4 Hajj months as 12-3 (based on naming of the months, which is outside of the Quran)
Quranaloneislam proposed 4 Hajj months as 9-12 (based on math, which is inside the Quran even after ignoring the gematrical data)
free-minds doesn't propose 4 Hajj months at all

Why is it so difficult to ascertain when Quran is clear, precise, easy, full and detailed?

In the end I totally agree, blind subscription is not what one wants.

Salaamun Alaykum,

Does anyone know how to insert picture in a post? I don't see in the menu bar above, is it even possible?

Thanks &

Peace on you too.

The article is completely off the track from QM perspective, do you subscribe to this view wholly or in parts?

Or let me ask this: what are the four Hajj months and when is the month of Ramadan as per your understanding?

walekumu salaam,
Dear Athman,

Thanks for the detail response. Yes, it is really helpful and make a lot of sense. It could also perhaps start with the very first covenant of ours when we all said Qalu Bala!

Jazak Allah Khair.
