Prophets and Messengers / Re: Prophet Yahya

Aslamaolaikum.

I would also agree with sister Chadiga's view. I am not sure how convincing the evidence is of Baptism in Christian sources. However, as far as I know the Quran does not mention it at all. So I am not sure whether this would be an article of belief for believers.

Sister Chadiga,

Aslamaolaikum.

It is so nice to see that even though your main language is German, that you are able to get your points across in another language. It is really nice to see you on the board and read your posts  :)

The problem that I see with this is, that, firstly, these data and the events are uncertain, we do not know if they and when they have even taken place. In addition, a Celebration of the birthday of Saints, Prophets and others, may bring us closer to the danger of idolizing. So I would omit the celebration of things that are related to the Deen, but get no support from the Koran, rather .

This is a very good point. Idolization happens in small steps and Satan knows very well how to lead people astray.

Salam brother Mubashir,

Would such information in the Old Testament not be incriminating?  Were some verses not intentionally hidden by the writers of the Old Testament as per the Quran?

Could it be possible that such incriminating verses were intentionally masked / hidden by the writers of the Old Testament?

Having said that though, 2 Chronicles 36:16 does seem to suggest that Prophets were given a 'hard time'. Not sure if this can be taken to men 'killing' but then I personally wouldn't expect such an incriminating verse in the Old Testament.

2 Chronicles 36:16
New International Version (NIV)
16 But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.

But the question really is not relevant in one way for the meaning of faith for our believe, it makes absolutely no difference whether we are now in the literal sense successor or not-an investigation in this regard may satisfy our curiosity, but brings us not closer to God  .... Salamu aleikum  wa Rahmatullah

Salam Chadiga,

That is quite an important point which you make which is quite often missed. Where there are more than one plausible explanations which don't directly affect our practice of religion today, how far does one go to interpret them? Unless of course there is some fundamental dispute or with those that follow the Bible etc.

But the point you make about satisfying our curiosity is a good one. At what point should one let go? .... interesting.

Salam Truth seeker,

Thanks for your response. How would you then understand 5:39 in this context?

005.039
YUSUFALI: But if the thief repents after his crime, and amends his conduct, Allah turneth to him in forgiveness; for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Here it seems to be talking about repenting after the crime. But if the hands are cut off before he has a chance to repent, then is this not unfair or is there another explanation to the verse which I may not be seeing.

Thanks.

Women / Re: Karzai pardons woman who agrees to marry her rapist ???

This is really sad. It is still clear that the Taliban mentality still remains. Agreeing to marry your attacker as a way out! Isn't there a draconian Biblical verse that allows this sort of thing?

This a very sad read indeed !

Aslamaolaikum Truth Seeker

I feel the traditional response to this verse is the most persuasive. This verse in my mind is clearly capturing some sort of prayer that the believers did after the death of a person. I have seen some that don't define salat as prayer to come up with all kinds of wacky responses to explain this. But I think this verse simply exposes their flawed concept.

I have been very disappointed with their interpretations and at times the lack of it. I think it refers to funeral related prayers too.

Thanks for your response.

Thanks will check it out In-sh'Allah :)

You might know others that might be interested in coming to this forum too. Its very new, but the more open forums discussing proper issues from the Quran in a truly sophisticated way, the better. We need more platforms and opportunities I think to gauge different views.

Aslamaolaikum.

Here are some recent resources I have collected:

These ones were posted by a brother called 'Waqas'. I've seen him on the ourbeacon / salaat forums but I think may be the same as the Waqas on free-minds too. Not sure.

He has often provided some really good resources. I've collected a few of his recommendations below.

Links to many excellent books on Islam, Quran and Hadith:

Aslamaolaikum

My experiences on some forums:

Free-minds.org
http://www.free-minds.org/

Quran first. God alone forum. Good all round range of views. Open forum. Traditional arguments also allowed and discussed.

Ya Nabi
http://www.yanabi.com/

Anything goes, very traditional and often very direct and crude. Be ready to get lynched by outspoken personalities. But views are allowed.

Sunni Forum
http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/forum.php

Pretty much like the above

MPACUK Forum
http://forum.mpacuk.org/

Quite an open forum with a range of views.

Ourbeacon.com
http://www.ourbeacon.com/cgi-bin/bbs60x/webbbs_config.pl

Restrictive, QXP (Dr. Shabbir's rendering of the Quran) only. Anything outside QXP thinking normally disallowed.

A version of the Perwazi School of Thought

Typical ideological beliefs.

(1) Do not believe in ritual salat. Salat is community gatherings / Divine system
(2) Do not believe in Biblical miracles as narrated in the Quran
(3) Do not believe in fasting as commonly understood
(4) Some do not believe in 'dua'.

Salaat Forum
http://www.salaatforum.com/

New forum, seems to be a spin off from the one above. Similar ideological beliefs as above but seems to be more open for discussion.

Dear sister Chadiga

Are we note assuming a lot from sources outside the Quran? Would this approach not be the same as using Islamic sources which are secondary to the Quran? How do we know any of this is right?

Thanks.

Islamic Duties / Verse 5/106 - What is meant by Salat?
« on: November 19, 2011, 12:53:06 AM »
Aslamaolaikum

A brother asked a question on another forum as to what is meant by 5:106 when the Quran says:

"After you have prayed, let the witnesses swear by God,"

He asked

What kind of prayer the verse is refering to?
Where and how this prayer would be performed?
Please, help me understand this ayat..thanks

He asked the question on two forums I sometimes visit.

http://www.salaatforum.com/index.php?id=178
http://www.ourbeacon.com/cgi-bin/bbs60x/webbbs_config.pl/page/1/md/read/id/314123119171714

I think the problem is that many on these forums don't believe salat in the Quran means prayer. I have asked for further clarification and I have not received a convincing response either.

I know brother Joseph has no problem with this verse as he clearly equates salat with prayer. But I wanted to know if anyone else had anything to add to this question or if they held a different view.

Links are above.

Thank you for helping.

Dear Brother Joseph,

Aslamaolaikum

I have posted on the salaat forum. I think many people just try to cheer on their side like a hockey match without bringing anything concrete into the argument. I think it is better that all debaters are given respect for their efforts who contribute to the discussion.

In the end, true learners only seek the best argument.

I have thanked you all for sharing your thoughts.

You can find my response here.
