Question: Is it proper, as some Muslims do, to address Muhammad (S) as "Master?"

3:79 Never would a human being, whom Allah has blessed with the Scripture, Wisdom and Prophethood, thereafter say to people, 'Be servants of me instead of Allah.' Rather, he would say, 'Become true devotees of the Lord since you learn and teach the Book and study it as it should be studied.'

Response:

Muhammad(saw) for many Muslim is what Quran says.

Quran says He(saw) has more rights on believers than their own Nafs.

Ownership of Nafs is far more than just Servant-Master relation.

A Master can own body of servant but not his soul and nafs.

A Master can own the body of a servant as long as he is living...the moment he is dead proprietary rights are finished...Mohammad(saw) own the believers even after their and His(saw) own worldly death.

I hope this bunch of Qur'anists understand the meanings of NAFS.

Besides Quran says "your Wali is Allah and His Apostle..........."

Those who call Mohammad "Mowla" exactly following Quran....Those who deny, are playing with Quran.
----------------------------------
Since there cannot be a contradiction in the Qur'an, what then is the correct interpretation of relationship between Muhammad (S) and his followers both back when he was alive and today?

Thanks.

Dear Br Sardar,

Since the Qur'an does not detail what to utter in our Salat (as we customarily offer it), then we need to figure out i'ts historical roots. What we have with us, other than following our ancestors through a cointinous practice, are hadith reports.

The idea of posting these reports was to see if they can be of any help in understanding the issue.

According to Hadith reports, here is what is reported to have happened:

[http://www.al-mawrid.org/pages/articles_english_detail.php?rid=159&cid=53]:

vi. During the Qa'dah

The qa'dah (sitting after completing the prostrations) of the prayer is reserved for supplications, and a person can say whatever supplication he wants to. The guidance provided by the practice of the Prophet (sws) in this regard is detailed out below:

1. 'Abdullāh Ibn Mas'ūd (rta) says that when we would pray with the Prophet (sws), we would say: 'Peace be to God from His servants and peace be to such and such persons'. When the Prophet (sws) heard this, he said: 'Don't say: 'Peace be to God', for God Himself is entirely peace. (All salutations, supplications and good deeds are for God. Peace be to you O Messenger of God, and blessings and mercy. Peace be to us also and to all pious people too). If you say these words, your supplication will reach every person who is in the sky or is found somewhere between the sky and the earth. [He further said:]أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ (I bear witness that there is no god except Allah and I bear witness that Muḥammad (sws) is His servant and messenger). After this, a person can say any supplication he wants to for himself.[51]

With slight variations, the above supplication is also reported by 'Umar (rta), 'A'ishah (rta), 'Abdullāh Ibn 'Umar (rta), 'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās (rta) and Abū Mūsā 'Ash'arī (rta).[52] It is evident from the narratives that after this, the Prophet (sws) would diligently teach this supplication to his Companions (rta).[53]

2. Abū Mas'ūd (rta) narrates: 'We were sitting at the place of Sa'd Ibn 'Ubādah (rta). When the Prophet (sws) came over, Bashīr Ibn Sa'd (rta) asked: 'O Messenger of God! God has directed us to send blessings on you; please let us know how we should do this?' At this, the Prophet (sws) kept silent and we wished that we had not asked this question. He then said: 'You should say:

O God! be merciful to Muhammad and his clan the way you have been merciful to Abraham and his clan and send Your blessings on Muhammad and his clan the way you have sent Your blessings on Abraham and his clan in this whole world. Indeed, You are great and possess all worthy attributes.''[54]

There are some variations in the words of this supplication; however, by and large, the theme is the same. It is also narrated that the Prophet (sws) has said about the darūd: 'A person who sends mercy on me once, the Almighty will send mercy on him ten times.'[55]
The Qur'ānic directive referred to in the narrative is:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
The Prophet is blessed by God and His angels. Bless him, then, you who are true believers, and greet him with a worthy salutation. (33:56)

General Discussions / What do they recognize??
« on: March 02, 2012, 10:39:01 PM »
[Asad]

6:18 Say: "What could most weightily bear witness to the truth?" Say: "God is witness between me and you; and this Qur'an has been revealed unto me so that on the strength thereof I might warn you and all whom it may reach." Could you in truth bear witness that there are other deities side by side with God? Say: "I bear no [such] witness!" Say: "He is the One God; and, behold, far be it from me to ascribe divinity, as, you do, to aught beside Him!"

6:19

[Asad]

They unto whom we have vouchsafed revelation aforetime know this as they know their own children; yet those [of them] who have squandered their own selves -it is they who refuse to believe.

Shakir:

Those whom We have given the Book recognize him as they recognize their sons; (as for) those who have lost their souls, they will not believe.

Shabbir:

Those who have been given the Scripture, recognize this fact as they recognize their sons (the fact of God's Transcendental Uniqueness and Oneness). Yet those who have squandered their own "Self" fail to accept such undeniable Truth.

[Al-Muntakhib]

Those who were recipients of Our Word -Jews and Christians- to whom We gave the Book -AL-Tawrah and AL-Injil (Torah and Bible) do recognize this Book -the Quran- as well as the Messenger to whom it is sent. They assert the existence of this reality as much as they are able to assert the identity of their sons, but those who are cheaply vicious to the perdition of their own souls refuse to recognize the truth.

Question: What the Qur'an mean by 'They recognize as they recognize their sons?'. Is (tying it to the previous verse) it the fact that Alalh is One and he has no partners? Or does it mean that the People of the Book recognize Muhammad (S)  as a true Messenger? If the latter is meant than the question would arise as to why would they not accept him even though they recognize him as they would their sons?

The issue is the way Qur'an is translated. Although each translator tries to the the best he/she can, sometimes the way they go about it, does not satisfy a curious mind.

Thanks Brother for your response. Sometimes, imams preaching Khutbas highlight these practices and issue threats of hell over people ignoring them. Reason being, they say, this is from examples from the Apostle's life therefore binding!!

Thanks Brother for your explanation. Makes sense.

Looks as if the disciples were expressing their belief more from their tongues than their hearts. Therefore, they asked for some evidence to reassure themselves.

5:111 AND [remember the time] when I inspired the white-garbed ones: Believe in Me and in My Apostle!" They answered: "We believe; and bear Thou witness that we have surrendered ourselves [unto Thee]."

5:112 [And,] lo, the white-garbed ones said: "O Jesus, son of Mary! Could thy Sustainer send down unto us a repast from heaven?" [Jesus] answered: "Be conscious of God, if you are [truly] believers!"

5:113 aid they: "We desire to partake thereof, so that our hearts might be set fully at rest, and that we might know that thou hast spoken the truth to us, and that we might be of those who bear witness thereto!"

According to the translation above, does it not seem strange that the Huwareen (Disciples of Jesus AS) are described as those who believed and surrendered but soon after they seek a "proof?"

We read the same explained here

[Dr Shabbir]

5:111 Recall, I told the disciples in the Gospel, "Believe in Me and in My messenger. They said, "We believe, and be Witness that we have submitted."

5:112 When the disciples said, "O Jesus, son of Mary! Is your Lord Able to send down for us a Table Spread with Heavenly sustenance? Jesus said, "Be mindful of Allah's Laws if you are believers." (Establish the Divine Order on earth and that will ensure heavenly provision in abundance and equity (7:96)."

5:113 They said, "This is exactly what we want. So that we live with a contented heart and know that your System is truly workable. And that we may be witnesses for the future generations."

[Parwez] http://www.tolueislam.org/Parwez/expo/expo_005.htm

(111) Allah further said to Jesus: "When I asked your companions through the revelation given to you 'Believe in Me and in My Rasool'"; they said "We believe and bear witness that we are Muslims."

(112) Without the establishment of the Niz'am-e-Rabubiyyat, humanity is degraded since people are generally compelled out of necessity to barter their self-respect for bread, the companions of Jesus said to him, "Is it not possible for your Rabb to establish such a system"? ********* Jesus replied: "It is possible, provided you have trust in Allah and adhere to His Laws."

(113) They said: "If this done, we will be satisfied and we will bear witness that you have indeed spoken the truth to us."

Which then, is a better rendering? Thanks.

Peace!

5;101 You who believe, do not ask about matters which, if made known to you, might make things difficult for you- if you ask about them while the Quran is being revealed, they will be made known to you- for God has kept silent about them: God is most forgiving and forbearing.

Is this not a blessing from Allah SWT that He has made our Deen easy for us by asking us to avoid asking questions about unnecessry details? Does this not show that if important, will be made available for us in the Qur'an?

Why do we then, need to run after "details" outside the Qur'an and then are asked to observe the following through "Sunnah":

Reported Sunnahs of Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad [Sallaho alaihe wassallam ]

Sunnahs of Eating:
x Sit and eat on the floor.
x Spread out a cloth on the floor first before eating.
x Wash both hands up to the wrists.
x Recite "Bismillah wa'la barakatillah' aloud. (It is also noted by one great scholar Maulana Saeed Ahmad Khan Saheb Rahmatullah alaihe that we never say Bismillah before taking tea). Drinking should also be by right hand at all cost.
x Eat with the right hand.
x Eat from the side that is in front of you.
x If a morsel of food falls down, pick it up, clean it and eat it.
x Do not lean and eat.
x Do not find fault with the food.
x Remove your shoes before eating.
x When eating, sit with either both knees on the ground or one knee raised or both knees raised.
x Clean the plate and other utensils thoroughly after eating.
x By doing this, the utensils make dua for one's forgiveness.
x Recite dua after eating.
x First remove the food then get up
x After meals wash both the hands.
x Thereafter gargle the mouth.
x Whilst eating one should not remain completely silent.
x Eat with three fingers if possible..
x One should not eat very hot food.
x Do not blow on the food.
x After eating one should lick his fingers.

Sunnahs of drinking:
x A Muslim should drink with the right hand.
x Shaytaan Drinks with the left hand.
x Sit and drink.
x Recite "Bismillah" before drinking.
x After drinking say " Alhamdullilah".
x Drink in 3 breaths removing the utensil from the mouth after each sip.
x Do not drink directly from the jug or bottle.
x One should pour the contents into a glass first and then drink.

Sunnahs of Sleeping:
x Discuss with one's family members matters pertaining to Deen before going to sleep (whether it is in the form of reading some Islamic Books or narrating some incidents of Sahabah etc.)..
x To sleep in the state of Wuzu.
x To make the bed yourself.
x Dust the bed thrice before retiring to bed.
x One should change into some other clothes (e.g.pyjamas) before going to sleep.
x It is Sunnah to sleep immediately after Isha Salaah.
x To apply surmah in both the eyes.
x To brush the teeth with a miswaak.
x To sleep on the right hand side.
x To sleep with the right palm under the right cheek.
x To keep the knees slightly bent when sleeping.
x To refrain from sleeping on ones stomach.
x To sleep on a bed or to sleep on the floor are both sunnah.
x To face Qiblah.
x To recite Surah Mulk, before sleeping.
x To recite Ayatul Kursi.
x To recite Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas before sleeping 3 times and thereafter blow over the entire body thrice.
x Recite Tasbeeh-e-Fathima before sleeping.( i.e. 33 X Subhan Allah 33 X Alhamdulillah and 34 X Allahu Akbar).
x To recite the dua before sleeping.
x To wake up for Tahajjud Salaah.

Sunnahs on Awakening:
x On awakening rub the face and the eyes with the palms of the hands in order to remove the effects of sleep.
x When the eyes open in the morning say " Alhamdullilah" thrice and then recite Kalima Tayyibah.
x Thereafter recite the dua on awakening.
x On awakening cleanse the mouth with a miswaak

Dear Chadiga,

These and other "translations" I have also come accross at aastana.com !!

If we accept what they are saying about the real meaning of menses ("....means keep yourself away from the oppressed or weak people till they have cleared of the wrong thoughts and ideas. Once they are pure according to Quranic teachings then you may come to them according to the orders of Quran. Because God loves those who return to the right path and purifies....") then it makes no sense either. People who are sick need medicne; People who are lost in strange ideologies need to be introduced to True Guidance (Qur'an). Why would staying away from such people will be advised? Why not apporach them and discuss and explain to them what True Deen is??

General Discussions / Is 5:3 The last verse of the Qur'an?
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:23:06 PM »
Salam Dear All.

We read in 5:3 "Today, those who are bent on denying the truth have lost all hope of [your ever forsaking] your religion: do not, then, hold them in awe, but stand in awe of Me! Today have I perfected your religious law for you, and have bestowed upon you the full measure of My blessings, and willed that self-surrender unto Me shall be your religion. As for him, however, who is driven [to what is forbidden] by dire necessity and not by an inclination to sinning -behold, God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

Can we take this as the last verse of the Qur'an? Or the meaning here entails some other aspect?

Thanks.

Salams

Upon reading 4:34 we find translators using words like beat, scourge, go away, give examples, separate, hit, ignore/disregard/push, beat them (lightly), strike (lightly), smack, chastise, go to bed with them (when they are willing), etc.

What should be the right term for Wadribu Hunna? Why use the term beat (for infidelity) when divorce is allowed in Islam [besides there are other punishments for immoral behaviour]. Which husband would want to be friendly with a wife who is unfaithful or loose with her morals?

What about the following translation be Dr Kamal Omar:

Dr. Kamal Omar

The men are Qawwam (protectors, maintainers and guardians) over women because of what Allah has bestowed more to some of those (who constitute the community as men and women) in comparison to others, and because what the men spent (on the family members) out of their earnings (and wealth). Therefore the righteous women (are those who are) devoutly obedient (in accordance with the limits set in the Book of Allah), acting as guards to the hidden aspect of what Allah has guarded. And those women (from whom) you (husbands) apprehend their attitude of disruption and break-up " so deliver them the Message, (if still they do not correct their attitude) leave them (unresponded in their sexual desires) in their beds, (if still they do not mend and the breakdown of the family-bond is imminent) wazribuhunna [then bring forward to them (the suggestion for dissolution of marriage)]. Then if these women obeyed you (the way Allah desires in His Book) then do not seek against them any outlet (to get rid of them). Surely, Allah is Most Elevated, Most High.

Would appreciate your help in understanding this verse.

Thanks.

Respectfully, the Qur'an is guidance, warning and good news. It should be read in a manner that is respectful. Not like we were singing poetry and. It is serious business. People feel good after such recitations, kiss it and put it back on the shelf. Some have Qirat competitions. What we need is Fehm (Comprehension) competitions. The Books asks us to study it with care and nowhere it suggests we engage in recitation competitions.

Salam Br Joseph,

The above translation was from Muhammad Asad.

If we pick other translations, men are advised to excercise self control and wait (rather than marrying slave girls). If this is the case, we wonder why as it would be a noble act to marry one in servitude and help her obtain freedom.

Is he being advised to wait and look for women who are free or is he being advised to wait rather than rushing into a marriage for physical/sexual reasons alone?

You are right about the physical attraction part. The verse quoted clearly shows that the blessed Messenger experienced attraction to beauty. This blows the theory of wearing Niqabs out of the water. I can understand the head covering worn by Muslim women but could never figure out why do they go to extremes and wear Niqabs? For Muslim women living in the West, if the idea of Niqab is not to attract unwanted male attention it fails miserably on that count alone as most people turn to look at them!!
