Criticism of Hadith

Early criticism of the Hadith predates the time of Al-Shafi'i (d. 204 AH/820 CE) and is found in a text that Muslim tradition holds to be a letter from the Kharijite Abd Allah Ibn Ibad to the Caliph Abd al-Malik in 76/695. Though the authorship and dating of this letter are in some dispute, it still predates al-Shafii and its importance as a challenge to the authority of the Hadith remains undented. A key passage of this letter criticizes the Kufans for taking “Hadiths” for their religion abandoning the Quran. “They believed in a book which was not from God, written by the hands of men; they then attributed it to the Messenger of God.”A group referred to as Ahl al-Kalam, who lived during the time of Al-Shafii and mentioned in his Kitab Jima al-Ilm rejected the Hadith on theological grounds. Their basic argument was that the Quran was an explanation of everything (16:89). They contended that obedience to the Prophet was contained in obeying only the Qur'an that God has sent down to him, and that when the Qur’an mentioned the Book together with Wisdom, the Wisdom was the specific rulings of the Book.”Daniel Brown notes that the principal argument of Ahl al-Kalam was that the Hadith does not accurately reflect the Prophetic example, as the transmission of Hadith reports was not reliable. The Prophetic example, they argued, “has to be found elsewhere – first and foremost in following the Qur’an.” And according to them, “the corpus of Hadith is filled with contradictory, blasphemous, and absurd traditions.”

Mutazilites, who represented one of the earliest rationalist Muslim theological schools, and are the later Ahl al-Kalam, also viewed the transmission of the Prophetic sunnah as not sufficiently reliable. The Hadith, according to them, was mere “guesswork and conjecture [… and] the Quran was complete and perfect, and did not require the Hadith or any other book to supplement or complement it.”

 Assalam alaikum,
May I have the pleasure of contributing something on the topic posted above by Ijaz Ahmad, and observe that whoever we are... Students or Teachers, we should NOT be too critical of any Hadith reported from the Leader of Mankind and Messenger of Allah, Sayyidina Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.. on account of its being 'weak' or 'unrealiable' ISNAD. We should accept such so called weak Hadith out of respect for the Noble Messenger, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam. If it is an incorrect Hadith, there is no responsibility on us for accepting it. This is high Adaab/good manners.

 And as Sayyid Ibn Arabi, may Allah be Merciful to him, says, we must allow/accept weak Traditions [Hadith] that encourage the practice of pious works and/or those that convey an indisputable spiritual teaching. Ibn Arabi considers that one of the specific traits of an heir of the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, is to apply Hadith, in as a broad a way as possible, whether they be authentic or weak, by regularly practising the former, and, even if only once, the latter, taking into account all nuances brought out by the different versions, without attaching himself solely to the exterior criteria of the validity of the Hadith, except obviously when it is a matter of LICIT or ILLICIT.

 The imitation of the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, in conformity to the Sunnah leads in effect, according to the Holy Qur'an, to Divine Love: 'SAY: IF TRULY YOU LOVE ALLAH, THEN FOLLOW ME, ALLAH WILL LOVE YOU.' (3:31)

What shall we do with the primary source-Qoran-,ignore it:

6:19
Say, "Whose testimony is the greatest?" Say, "God's. He is the witness between me and you that this Quran has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and whomever it reaches. Indeed, you bear witness that there are other gods* beside God." Say, "I do not testify as you do; there is only one god, and I disown your idolatry."
قُل أَىُّ شَىءٍ أَكبَرُ شَهٰدَةً قُلِ اللَّهُ شَهيدٌ بَينى وَبَينَكُم وَأوحِىَ إِلَىَّ هٰذَا القُرءانُ لِأُنذِرَكُم بِهِ وَمَن بَلَغَ أَئِنَّكُم لَتَشهَدونَ أَنَّ مَعَ اللَّهِ ءالِهَةً أُخرىٰ قُل لا أَشهَدُ قُل إِنَّما هُوَ إِلٰهٌ وٰحِدٌ وَإِنَّنى بَرىءٌ مِمّا تُشرِكونَ


Did God forget to mention " hadith" as well in this verse?
What is Qoran saying to us here?  Take another source beside it?compromise?

If we do , does it means we do not believe what GOD is saying?:

6:21
Who is more evil than one who lies about God, or rejects His revelations? The transgressors never succeed.
وَمَن أَظلَمُ مِمَّنِ افتَرىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَو كَذَّبَ بِـٔايٰتِهِ إِنَّهُ لا يُفلِحُ الظّٰلِمونَ 


Is GOD not asking us to preach only with Qoran?

6:51
And preach with this (Quran) to those who reverence the summoning before their Lord - they have none beside Him as a Lord and Master, nor an intercessor - that they may attain salvation.
وَأَنذِر بِهِ الَّذينَ يَخافونَ أَن يُحشَروا إِلىٰ رَبِّهِم لَيسَ لَهُم مِن دونِهِ وَلِىٌّ وَلا شَفيعٌ لَعَلَّهُم يَتَّقونَ


Should we value GOD as HE should be valued,believe HIS words and heed HIS warning? Accepting GOD s message is accepting HIS words?

6:91
They never valued God as He should be valued. Thus, they said, "God does not reveal anything to any human being." Say, "Who then revealed the scripture that Moses brought, with light and guidance for the people?" You put it down on paper to proclaim it, while concealing a lot of it. You were taught what you never knew - you and your parents. Say, "God (is the One who revealed it)," then leave them in their heedlessness, playing.
وَما قَدَرُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدرِهِ إِذ قالوا ما أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلىٰ بَشَرٍ مِن شَىءٍ قُل مَن أَنزَلَ الكِتٰبَ الَّذى جاءَ بِهِ موسىٰ نورًا وَهُدًى لِلنّاسِ تَجعَلونَهُ قَراطيسَ تُبدونَها وَتُخفونَ كَثيرًا وَعُلِّمتُم ما لَم تَعلَموا أَنتُم وَلا ءاباؤُكُم قُلِ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ ذَرهُم فى خَوضِهِم يَلعَبونَ

6:92
This too is a blessed scripture that we have revealed, confirming the previous scriptures, that you may warn the most important community* and all those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter will believe in this (scripture), and will observe the Contact Prayers (Salat).
وَهٰذا كِتٰبٌ أَنزَلنٰهُ مُبارَكٌ مُصَدِّقُ الَّذى بَينَ يَدَيهِ وَلِتُنذِرَ أُمَّ القُرىٰ وَمَن حَولَها وَالَّذينَ يُؤمِنونَ بِالـٔاخِرَةِ يُؤمِنونَ بِهِ وَهُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم يُحافِظونَ


What does believe in this Qoran mean?

Of course everyone is free to follow what they wish.
  But GOD has told us  that there will be those who uphold other sources:

6:112
We have permitted the enemies of every prophet - human and jinn devils - to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
وَكَذٰلِكَ جَعَلنا لِكُلِّ نَبِىٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيٰطينَ الإِنسِ وَالجِنِّ يوحى بَعضُهُم إِلىٰ بَعضٍ زُخرُفَ القَولِ غُرورًا وَلَو شاءَ رَبُّكَ ما فَعَلوهُ فَذَرهُم وَما يَفتَرونَ
6:113
This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.*
وَلِتَصغىٰ إِلَيهِ أَفـِٔدَةُ الَّذينَ لا يُؤمِنونَ بِالـٔاخِرَةِ وَلِيَرضَوهُ وَلِيَقتَرِفوا ما هُم مُقتَرِفونَ


I wonder why GOD said the following?:
6:114
Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.
أَفَغَيرَ اللَّهِ أَبتَغى حَكَمًا وَهُوَ الَّذى أَنزَلَ إِلَيكُمُ الكِتٰبَ مُفَصَّلًا وَالَّذينَ ءاتَينٰهُمُ الكِتٰبَ يَعلَمونَ أَنَّهُ مُنَزَّلٌ مِن رَبِّكَ بِالحَقِّ فَلا تَكونَنَّ مِنَ المُمتَرينَ

6:115
The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. Nothing shall abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.
وَتَمَّت كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدقًا وَعَدلًا لا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمٰتِهِ وَهُوَ السَّميعُ العَليمُ

GOD has left it up to us to choose what to believe as well.
