skies... layers of atmosphere or the universe ?

assalamu alaikum guys,

Do you think "skies" mentioned in the Quran are always about atmosphere ? Can they be a reference to the universe ? For example 67:5 tells us about the universe:

"And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze."

However 55:33 can also be understood as a reference to the atmosphere:

"O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah ]."
