Makkah, Baca & Hajj
« on: September 07, 2012, 05:51:14 AM »
Dear brother Joseph

Salam to you

There are many different views between Qur'an followers about the true place where Abraham (pbuh) built the original house. Some say it was Baca, others Makkah. Some say the true place of Hajj is Jerusalem, others say the direction-qibla at Makkah is wrong, hence the Hajj is wrong. Some say the Sacred Mosque is not in Makkah etc etc. There is much confusion. I would like to know what your opinions are on these topics given your own analysis.

Thank you so much for your help.

Salamun Alaikum.

In my humble opinion:

(a) The original sanctuary built by Prophet Abraham (ancient house) was at Bakkah not Makkah. These are two different locations. Please see article [1].

(b) The Ka'aba is associated with the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) and is in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Please see article [2].

(c)  The Ka'aba was made a place of monotheistic worship and ancient Abrahamic rites as explained in detail by the Quran were reinstituted at the Ka'aba (Makkah today). So the Hajj today at Makkah is correct and is supported by the Quran in my personal opinion. I have argued this in section [8] of article [1]. Of course, there are practices that have been introduced and added to the Hajj today which I find no support for in the Quran. However, I have discussed those comprehensively in my Hajj related article [3] and with connected articles.

(d) There were two Qibla changes, with the latter being back to Makkah. I have argued this in article [4]. Therefore, today's Qiblah direction towards Makkah is correct from a Quranic perspective in my humble opinion.

Therefore in summary, with regards the traditional position and my own humble perspective of the Quran:
  • Sacred Mosque and Ka'aba is at Makkah – I agree
  • Hajj is to be performed at Makkah - I agree
  • The direction of prayer is to Makkah - I agree
  • Tawaaf of the Ka'aba, Safa and Marwah are part of Hajj rituals at Makkah - I agree
  • Prophets Abraham and Ishmael built the original house at Makkah, Saudi Arabia - I disagree. The original location was at ‘Bakkah’. (3:96)
