question about 24:58 (lam yablughoo alhuluma) ?
« on: April 30, 2016, 01:54:07 AM »
Assalamu alaikum folks,

This question is basically about "lam" and "lamma" prepositions. We have "lam" in 65:4 (lam yahidna), not "lamma". It makes sense when you think of it with 65:4 and the women who don't menstruate.

But in 24:58, I expected "lamma" for the children who haven't "yet" hit the puberty. But the preposition in that ayat is also "lam" not "lamma".

Why is it "lam" and not "lamma" there in 24:58 ?

Can someone please inform me about this grammatical situation we have here ?

Walaikum Salam ilker,

Though it doesn't touch on 24:58, I believe the following article may suffice. I am not sure if you have already read it or not, but it deals with a similar issue.

http://quransmessage.com/articles/verse%2065-4%20FM3.htm

If you have already read that article, and it doesn't sufficiently answer you particular question, then I will do my best to give you my humble understanding, God-willing.

Peace.

Salam Hassan A,

Yes, I read brother Joseph's article. I also read several articles about "lam / lamma" generally based on 65:4. However when i read 24:58, for the children that have "not yet" hit puberty, i got confused when i saw "lam" in the ayat. So i really need some grammatical clarification on the issue.

How would it change the meaning if it was "lamma yablughoo alhuluma" instead of "lam yablughoo alhuluma" ? What would the reader understand ?

salam

I don't know if there is a medical condition such that a child can't go into puberty throughout his life. It sounds highly unlikely.

I have not studied the lam/lamma issue but please see the part in bold:
http://misconceptions-about-islam.com/muhammad-married-young-girl.htm

It is unequivocal.

salam wakas. nice article. thank you. when i read about "talaq" and "lam/lamma" connection i got it quite well. But when i read 24:58 i got confused about the "lam/lamma" difference again. i know very little about arabic grammar so i needed some help to clarify the issue. you know...

thanks again.
