But Even Those That Follow the Quran Can't Agree!
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:39:51 PM »
Salaam wr wb

What do you feel would be an effective response if they were to ask sincerely, or even as a barb "yeah but the people who hold the Qur'an alone come to different conclusions on a book that is supposed to be clear, highly detailed' etc....meaning that those who are in authority today (among the Quran alone) come to differing conclusions.

May peace be with you.

As I am sure you will no doubt appreciate that if people come to differences of opinion on an interpretation of a Quranic verse, this does not mean that the source is fallible or the Quran-centric approach is not the best approach.

All it intimates is that when human intervention is coupled with human fallibility, possible differences / errors will seep through to any enterprise that human's undertake.

There will always be those that make use of scriptures to support their deep held convictions and world views and of course, this has contributed to at times fractious opinions even amongst those that claim to follow the Quran.

In the end, it would still remain a matter of consultation and discussions but from a Quran-perspective. Best evidence, coupled with a need to reach some sort of consensus. Even the Prophet was asked to consult with his immediate contemporaries and to come to some sort of consensus. No doubt, even for the Prophet, the Quran still remained his primary source.

006.155
"And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: So follow it (Arabic: fa-ittabi'uhu) and fear (God) / be righteous so that you may receive mercy"

003:159 (part)
"… and consult (Arabic: watamiru) among yourselves. And when you have decided, then put thy trust in God. Indeed! God loves those who put their trust (in Him)"

The approach would be no different today with the Quran at the helm.

In the end, all believers are governed by the sentiments of verses 64:16, 39:18 and 39:55 to do the best we can in matters of religion and take from the Quran the best interpretation. There will always be those that abuse such privileges and in their private spheres. However, their matter is with their Lord.

Such contrivances even existed at the time of the Prophet which is quite clear from the Quran. Once 'hawa' gets in the way, then it is indeed a slippery slope.

025.043
"Have you seen him who takes his desires (passion, impulse, lust) (Arabic: Hawahu) for his God (Arabic: Illahahu)? Will you then be a protector over him?"

I hope that helps, God willing.
Joseph.
