There are two punishments for Qatal one the killer should pay first the Blood Money and second free  a believing Slave but in case he does not find any such slave  he has to fast for two months continuously. Fasting is an additional punishment. Allah can give any kind of punishment as during fasting one has forego 1- Food 2-Water,3- All other comforts of one's daily life etc.
May entire creation be filled with Peace & Joy & Love & Light

Salaam sister zafreen,
I think the fasting mentioned in the verse is referring to cases of manslaughter, not murder. It is prescribed for those who cannot free a slave.i don't see the fasting as an extra punishment but,an aid to seeking acceptance of repentance from God.

Sardar Miyan

Sister Zara The punishment for man slaughter is not only Fasting but after paying blood money the killer has to fast for  two months as per Ayah 92 of Surah Nisa
May entire creation be filled with Peace & Joy & Love & Light

Dear Zafreen,

As-salamu alaykum

Notwithstanding fasting in the way to seek the pleasure / mercy of God - to learn self-restraint and to thank Him (2:185), fasting is also one of the ways a believer can seek redemption / expiation no different from offering charity or sacrifice. It is not simply a punishment but a mechanism / avenue to seek atonement.

'...then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice...' (2:196)

As another example, if you note verse 5:95, a penalty is cited for killing game on Hajj. One is to make an offering of a similar animal. If this is not possible, then in the same verse, there is another expiation (kaffara); that is of feeding the poor or an equivalent recompense (adhlu). The equivalent recompense given is fasting.

I hope this helps, God willing,
Joseph

To my knowledge "hajj" is not mentioned in chapter 5 at all.

QuoteThere is just-recompense (qisas) for violating the restrictions/sanctions/hurrumat [2:194], but not for violating the sha3air. This suggests that the restriction one is under in 5:2 and 5:95-96 refers to the restrictions during the restricted/inviolable months, and not only during when one is undertaking HaJJ. In fact HaJJ is not mentioned in chapter 5.

What is your thoughts on this possibility?

Peace Wakas,

"...Do not kill the game, while you are in 'ihram' / state of ihram..." (5:95 part)

Notwithstanding Umrah, why else would someone be in such a state? There is a restriction stated due to certain set of circumstances.

Your suggestion (even if it were entertained) would mean potentially all 4 months when game could not be killed. This seems unduly excessive. Hajj is cited in the Quran as taking a certain number of days and far more plausible in my humble opinion, that in that period, game is not to be killed [1]
